The beauty of epic fantasy is how endlessly vast and complex the world(s) we create can be. Unfortunately, this complexity can also be its curse.

Consider this your One-Stop Wiki for all things Dessos and The Last Draegion. Find character lists, translations, pronunciations, and glossaries for all of Cindy L. Sell’s work here.

Keeping this page updated is an on-going endeavor. If you’re looking for something that isn’t here, it’s likely Ravlok is sleeping on the job, or perhaps trying to keep Daeya from world-ending destruction. You can consult the Tome of Eolaan again at another time, or shoot Cindy an email using the link at the top of this page.

History of the Tome of Eolaan

Thousands of years before the events of The Last Draegion Saga, the Ancient Ones called the Greater Gods to Dessos. Their magic had grown so powerful that it began to corrupt their original bodies—vessels shaped much like the dragons who inhabit Dessos today. The Ancient Ones had stopped reproducing and slowly found themselves dying out as their magic devoured itself.

In exchange for the gods’ aid in preventing their demise, the Ancient Ones offered up the dominion of their world, allowing Saolanni, Baosanni, and Ordeolas to populate Dessos with new beings. First came their children, the nine lesser gods, and then the nine races of mortals, whom the lesser goddess Mira made in her brothers’ and sisters’ images.

Dragons were created as an homage to the Ancient Ones’ original bodies, and the souls of these draegion were supplanted into Mira’s creations. However, the gods quickly found that these beings took to the corrosive draegion magic too easily and became forces of unstoppable fury. But when Soul Shifted into the bodies of other mortals, the sheer weight of a draegion soul’s collective memories destroyed these vessels.

It was not until Eolaan, the Mother of Stories, bound the memories of an Ancient One into a magical tome that the gods’ promise to the draegion could be fully realized. By preserving the memories in the tome, Eolaan could limit the amount of knowledge borne by a newly Shifted mortal vessel. And so, too, did a bond form between Eolaan and the draegion soul.

By working closely with Ordeolas, Greater God of Order, Eolaan learned to manage and calm her charge, sharing memories as needed from the tome to preserve the draegion’s rich history. Only, as the reborn draegion’s power grew, the corruption that had plagued the Ancient One’s former vessel returned.

Before the vessel could corrupt fully, the gods used the tome to temporarily store the soul while a new vessel could be formed. As closely tied to the draegion as she was, Eolaan’s soul also fused with the tome, allowing her better control of the knowledge within it.

Eolaan’s soul still resides in the tome to this day, always willing to provide information to those in need. Find the answers to your questions by consulting Ravlok, the current keeper of the tome, and the tabs on this Wiki.

May Tiior favor your search for knowledge.

What is a draegion, anyway?

Stories say they were merely dragon riders. Many claim they were once the true dragons themselves. Almost all believe they possessed the strongest magic in the world—a magic that eventually grew so powerful that it destroyed itself. None of the myths surrounding the draegion have it exactly right, but all hold kernels of truth.

Why dragonbonds?

The dragonbond was forged between draegion and dragons to diffuse the Ancient One’s power temporarily and keep the magic from overwhelming its mortal vessel.

A dragonbond is mutually beneficial. When a dragon agrees to bond with a draegion, a special connection is formed—one that seems to neutralize the corrosive force of draegion magic. While a draegion receives a stabilizing force with which to share their magic, a dragon receives extra magic that can aid in producing viable eggs, stronger bodies, and much higher social status.
